4. Background and Rationale
Mountain ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to climate change, facing rapid glacier melt, erratic rainfall, biodiversity loss, and threats to mountain livelihoods. Young people often lack platforms to creatively express these issues.
This project uses art and poetry as powerful tools to build awareness, encourage youth engagement, and inspire climate action.
The project also honors Dr. Chandra Gurung, a pioneer in Nepal’s community-based conservation, who dedicated his life to protecting mountain ecosystems and empowering Indigenous and local communities. Introducing his contributions will help participants connect conservation with leadership and local wisdom.
5. Objectives
To build awareness on the impacts of climate change in Nepal’s mountain regions through creative mediums.
To engage students and youth in an art and poetry competition focused on climate change.
To conduct a short workshop on understanding climate change, its local impacts, and ways to take personal and community-level climate action.
To introduce participants to Dr. Chandra Gurung’s life, legacy, and contributions to conservation in Nepal.
To encourage youth to use art and poetry for environmental advocacy.
