On the occasion of International Mountains Day, The Drishti Foundation Trust organized a special Cleaning Drive in Shillong, Meghalaya, to honour and protect the pristine beauty of India’s hill regions. The initiative brought together enthusiastic volunteers, local youth, and community members to clean mountain trails, public spaces, and surrounding natural areas.

The activity aimed to promote environmental responsibility, reduce waste in eco-sensitive zones, and encourage citizens to preserve Meghalaya’s rich natural heritage. Through collective effort, awareness messages, and hands-on participation, the drive highlighted the importance of keeping our mountains clean, healthy, and sustainable for future generations.

This meaningful action reaffirmed Drishti Foundation Trust’s commitment to environment conservation, community involvement, and sustainable living, ensuring that the majestic landscapes of Shillong continue to thrive and inspire.

  On December 12th, we will celebrate International Mountain Day with a presentation by geologist and mountaineer Luis Carcavilla at the Natural History Museum in Zaragoza, Spain. This event is organized by the Mountain Wilderness Spain association and the museum. In this talk, Luis Carcavilla will review the factors that influence the conservation of the Himalayas and its glaciers, describing their geology, landscapes, and culture, drawing on his experience from more than 20 trips to the region over the last two decades. As glaciers disappear, vulnerable mountain communities will suffer the most.

Mountain communities in developing countries are often among the world’s poorest and around half already do not have enough food for normal growth, development and a healthy life. Changes in glacier and snow melt rates affect their ability to grow crops and increase the risk of floods and landslides. Today over 15 million people globally are highly vulnerable to flooding from glacier lakes.
